Bangladesh batter Mahmudullah Riyad could retirement from the international cricket soon, confirmed the batter himself.
He is currently the standout player for Bangladesh in the ongoing World Cup, having made 198 runs at an average of 99 and a strike-rate of 101.02. He also bowled five overs and conceded 33 runs at an economy rate of 6.60.
He hit a century –a run-a-ball-111, although it came in a losing cause against South Africa at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. However the century took his World Cup century tally to three, most by a Bangladeshi batter.
In fact all of his four ODI centuries came in ICC tournament—apart from three World Cup centuries, he had a century in Champions Trophy.
“Honestly speaking, I am playing in my last World Cup. Performance and fitness will decide how long I will play for Bangladesh. Maybe, after a few days or very soon I will retire from international cricket,” Mahmudullah said on a video in ICC.
“It’s been a long time since I made my debut in 2007. Since then, I have been playing for a long time. I feel lucky to have hit so many hundreds in the World Cup,” he added.
Mahmudullah was dropped from the national team in guise of rest owing to sluggish batting and issues with fitness. No one however could grab the opportunity to replace Mahmudullah.
The batter, adorably dubbed as ‘silent killer’ worked silently with his fitness and technical issues to prepare for a call up and when the national call up came, he has been in superb touch.
“Cricket is a game that always surprises you. I worked hard to be a part of the World Cup and thanks to god that I am here. I have always tried to give my best,” he states.
The 37-year-old Mahmudullah said that he will keep on playing until he stays fit and his performances don’t go down.
