The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has named Shakib Al Hasan as the new ODI captain for the National Team. BCB President Nazmul Hassan, MP announced the appointment of the ace allrounder in Dhaka today [Friday, 11 August].
Mr Hassan said: “Shakib was the obvious choice to captain Bangladesh when the position fell vacant. I am very confident that his exemplary performance, experience, and leadership qualities will galvanise the team as we head into two massive events like the Asia Cup and the World Cup.”
Tamim Iqbal, who had announced his shock retirement from international cricket last month, reversed his decision to hang up his boots but decided to relinquish the captaincy post last week.
Now, the Asia Cup and the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup the leadership duty to most experienced prospects, Shakib Al Hasan. In between, Bangladesh also have a home ODI series lined up against New Zealand in September.
The 36-year-old Shakib makes a return as the ODI captain having previously led Bangladesh in 52 ODIs between 2009 and 2017. He replaces Tamim Iqbal who had stepped down from the role earlier this month.
Bangladesh is yet to announce the squad for the Asia Cup, and Nazmul confirmed that the same squad will feature in the much-anticipated Cricket World Cup.
