Gurbaz, Zadran ton aid Afghanistan to seal the series over Tigers’

Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran struck a hundred each that aided Afghanistan to seal the series by 2-0 as they registered a 142-run victory over Bangladesh in the second of the three one-day internationals at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chattogram on Saturday.

Gurbaz hit his career-best 145 off 125, smacking 13 fours and eight sixes while Zadran made 100 off 119 balls and shared 256 runs for the opening stand, Afghanistan’s highest partnership, putting up 331-9, its highest against Bangladesh and third largest overall in its history.

Mujeeb-Ur-Rahman and Fazalhaq Farroqi took three wickets each while Rashid khan and Mohamamd Nabi took 2 and 1 wicket to restrict Bangladesh to 189 in 43.2 overs.

Mushfiqur Rahim scored the highest with 69 while the next highest 25 each came Shakib Al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s bat.

With the ball, Mustafizur Rahman, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Hasan Mahmud took two each while Ebadot Hossain finished with one wicket.

Bangladesh were never in game to chase down the mammoth target as they lost their top six batsman for 72 runs inside the 18.3 overs.

Liton Das who made 26 in the first match, fell to Fazalhaq for 13 while the opener Najmul Hossain Shanto was dismissed by Mujeeb.

Mohammad Naim who managed a call in the playing XI after around year of hiatus, could manage 9 after Fazalhaq rattled his stumps to mount pressure for the home side.

Tigers’ oppression further enhanced when Towhid Hridoy, Shakib Al Hasan and Afif Hossain were cut for 16, 25 and a duck to shorten the Tigers to 67-2.

However, Mushfiqur and Mehidy shared a 87-run stand to stitch the innings however, the duo couldn’t extend it further after the latter gave a catch to Rahmat Shah by Mujeeb.

The Afghan finger spinner then had Hasan Mahmud to complete his three-wicket haul.

Mushfiq carried on single-handedly, but his innings was not substantial enough to level the series.

With Afghanistan eyeing over 350 after the record-breaking partnership, Bangladesh bowlers came back strongly to take nine wickets for just 75 runs and gave the side a chance to create a record chase in their 'do or die' match as the pitch is still playing good.

Sent to bat, Gurbaz put Bangladesh bowlers in sword after Liton Das who led the side following Tamim Iqbal's retirement issue that was reversed after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's intervention, decided to bowl first.

He was particularly harsh on Mustafizur Rahman who was bowling short in abundance. After hitting eight fours and six sixes, Gurbaz raised his fourth century off exact 100 balls, tucking a delivery of Shakib Al Hasan toward mid-wicket for a single.

After the century, he came on hard against Bangladesh bowlers but Shakib finally dismissed him via lbw, before he made more damage. Gurbaz reviewed the decision in vain.

Following the dismissal of Gurbaz, Bangladesh bowlers regrouped well to take the upper-hand of the match as they started taking wicket in regular interval.

Amid the bowlers' good work, Ibrahim Zadran brought up his ton off 118 balls, driving Mustafizur to sweeper cover for a single.

Mustafizur got rid of him immediately in next delivery as Afghanistan batting line up fell like a pack of cards, much to Bangladesh's delight.

Mohammad Nabi's 15 ball-25 not out was the only other 20 plus score apart from the century of the duo.

Afghanistan lead the three-match series 1-0 following their 17-run victory on DLS method in the first game.
