‘Bangladesh is one of the top contenders for the WC title’

Sri Lanka’s World Cup winning campaigner and Bangladesh national women’s team head coach Hasan Tillakaratne believes that Bangladesh men’s team has all the ingredients to clinch the forthcoming ICC World Cup scheduled to be held in the later part of this year in India.

Apart from being the runner-up in the 2012 and 2016 Asia Cups, Bangladesh’s highest success in a major tournament came when they reached the quarterfinals of the 2015 World Cup and the semis of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017.

However, with the availability of the likes of Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim, Liton Das, Mustafizur Rahman, Taskin Ahmed, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, it is believed that Bangladesh are likely to achieve their highest success in this edition of the World Cup to overcome their past woes.

‘Of course, if you go through the names, one of the top contenders for the title. They have all the ingredients to go all the way and win the World Cup. They need to believe in themselves, gel together,' said Tillakaratne on Sunday in Mirpur.

He also notified that they are all set to commence the national women’s team preparation camp ahead of their three one-day internationals and the similar number of Twenty20 internationals on July 1 at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on July 1.

‘We started our training. Spin bowling coach is working with spinners. We are starting our camp on the first of July. I think we have a formidable side, formidable squad with young and experienced.’

‘Going through the process is very much important. That’s we said yes we have a very busy schedule; India coming, and then we have Asian Games in Pakistan. I am sure we are going through the process and facing those tough challenges and managing those we have good chances. Let me take some good decisions to bring some positive results in future.’

India women’s team will arrive in Dhaka on July 6 to play three ODIs and as many T20Is.

The T20Is are scheduled on July 9, 11 and 13 at the SBNCS while the three ODIs, which are part of the 2022-25 ICC Women's ODI Championship cycle, will be played on July 16, 19 and 22 at the same venue.
