Najmul Hossain Shanto and Zakir Hasan each hit a fifty that helped Bangladesh gain a mammoth 370-run lead at stumps on the second day of the one-off Test against Afghanistan at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Thursday.
The duo remained unbeaten on 54 runs each, their fifth and second Test half centuries, respectively, to post 134-1 in the second innings, in reply to 146 all-out by the visitors.
Bangladesh managed 382 all-out in their first innings.
Batting in the second inning, the home side lost their opener, Mahmudul Hasan Joy, who made 76 in the initial innings for 17.
Then Shanto, who struck his third Test ton in the first innings, added an unbeaten 116 runs in the second wicket stand with his partner Zakir.
Amir Hamza claimed the lone wicket for the visiting side.
Earlier, with Ebadot Hossain claiming his second four wicket haul in the longest format of cricket and Mehidy Hasan, Taijul Islam, and Shoriful Islam taking two wickets each, Bangladesh all-out the tourists for a paltry 146 inside 39 overs, immediately after the day’s tea break that trailed them by 235 runs.
Thus, Mehidy landed his 150th Test wicket milestone since his debut in 2017 against England at the same venue.
Afsar Zazai scored the highest with 36, while Nasir Jamal finished with 35.
The tourists, who went to the day’s lunch on 35-3, suffered a terrible batting collapse, losing the remaining wickets just after the day’s second break.
Bangladesh, who resumed their innings on 362-5, could add 20 runs more before they were bowled out inside the first 43 minutes of the day’s initial spell.
Najmul Hossain Shanto scored the highest with 146, and their next highest score of 76 came from Mahmudul Hasan.
Debutant Nijat Masood was the standout bowler for the Afghans, claiming 5-79.
