Ebadot Hossain claimed his second four-wicket haul in Test cricket that guided Bangladesh to take control of the second session on the second day of the one-off Test against Afghanistan at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Thursday.
Apart from him, Shoriful Islam scalped two, while Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Taijul Islam took one wicket apiece to do maximum damage to the tourists, limiting them to 144-8 at tea, trailing them by 238 runs and needing 38 runs to avaoid follow on.
In their first innings, the home side managed 382.
Afghanistan, who went to lunch break on 35-3, were shortened to 144-8 in the day’s next break, and their highest 36 until now came from Afsar Zazai.
Resuming their innings after lunch, the Afghans lost their skipper, Hashmatullah Shahidi, who fell to Shoriful for 9, which mounted huge pressure on the side.
However, with Afsar Zazai and Nasir Jamal sharing a crucial 67-run stand for the fifth wicket, aided the tourists vastly to stitch the wrecked innings and also to overcome the pressure.
But eventually they failed to carry on the momentum after Mehidy had the latter for 35 in 24.5 overs.
His partner Afsar also followed his steps, just after an over, as Edabdot dismissed him on 35.
Ebadot then struck once again to claim his second four-wicket haul in Test cricket, removing Amir Hamza for 6.
And the session’s final blow came from Taijul, who excluded tailender Yamin Ahmadzai for a duck to give the home side the essence of bundling out the visitors by the stumps of the day.
Earlier, Bangladesh, who resumed their innings on 362-5, could add 20 runs more before they were bowled out inside the first 43 minutes of the day’s initial spell.
Najmul Hossain Shanto scored the highest with 146, and their next highest score of 76 came from Mahmudul Hasan.
Debutant Nijat Masood was the standout bowler for the Afghans, claiming 5-79.
