Afghanistan Test team in town

The Afghanistan national cricket team landed in Dhaka on Saturday in two contingents to battle in the one-off Test match against the host Bangladesh starts at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on June 14.

The first group of tourists arrived at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 11 a.m., followed by the remaining part at 5 p.m.

Upon their arrival the visitors checked into the designated team hotel.

Meanwhile, the home side also checked into the team hotel on the same day.

According to a Bangladesh Cricket Board official, Bangladesh’s veteran opener Tamim Iqbal, who is suffering from back pain that he sustained during the training sessions on Wednesday, was expected to register at the hotel at night.

Simultaneously, his teammate and stand-in captain, Liton Das, who sustained a fever, also reported to the team hotel ahead of the series.

Both sides will commence their three-day long training session today as a part of their buildup for the series that will endure until June 13.

Hashmatullah Shahidi would lead the touring Afghans in the tie.

The visitors have arrived sans their biggest star campaigner Rashid Khan who was given rest for the longer-version match as he has just recovered from a back injury.

However, players like Rahmat Shah, Afsar Zazai, Ibrahim Zadran and Nasir Jamal, who were part of the last Test squad against Zimbabwe in 2021, are in the squad against the Tigers.

Afghanistan, who have featured in six Tests as yet since their inception of the longest format of cricket back in 2018, registered three wins and lost as many games.

The touring side have a good memory against Bangladesh as they managed a crushing 224-run win against the Shakib Al Hasan led Bangladesh in Chattogram in 2019.

The visitors are scheduled to take part in three practice sessions at the National Cricket Academy in Mirpur before they encounter the hosts in the lone Test from June 14-18.

After the conclusion of the game they would then travel back to their country and would return in the next month to battle three ODIs and two T20Is against Bangladesh in Chattogram and Sylhet respectively.
