Herath stresses on variations in WC

Bangladesh spin bowling coach Rangana Herath stressed on the variations that would help the spinners greatly in the forthcoming ICC World Cup scheduled to be held in India in October-November.

Although the approaching edition of the ICC World Cup is scheduled to be played in India on the typical subcontinent pitches where the spinners are expected to play the dominant role,.

However, the wicket conditions in such global events always remain sporting, offering equal advantages for the bowlers that include pacers and spinners alongside the batsman as well.

‘I always think that when the conditions are tough for the spinners, there will be challenges. That’s why we are going to be prepared before we go to the World Cup, said Herath on Tuesday in Mirpur.

The former legendary Sri Lankan spinner clarified that with the wicket conditions of the forthcoming marquee event in this year’s October and November in mind, they are underscoring both variation and tactic.

‘This is part of the preparation. We worked on variations and tactics. If you don’t get assistance from the pitch, this is the thing we need to apply for.’

He further said that it is always significant to have a mixture of spinners and pacers for a sustainable bowling attack, adding that they are looking to get the best bowling unit.

‘When you have a proper bowling unit, you have fast bowlers and spinners. That’s a proper bowling unit. That’s what we need to work on. We are trying to get the best bowling unit.’

Over the years, it has been seen that in the bowling department, spinners are leading the Tigers’ from the front during a bilateral, multilateral, regional, or global event.

However, the scenario changed in recent times with the pace bowling unit bringing in some monumental victories against the top ranked sides such as New Zealand, India, and England, both at home and abroad.

So, do pacers make the spinners' lives easier for now? Responding to the question, Herath voiced his unwillingness to credit a particular unit and instead liked to term it as a team work.

‘This is not about working easier or anything. This is all about the team. If someone is doing well, we need to appreciate all that.’

‘If it is someone not doing well, we need to find out where we need to improve. We are trying to improve as a team.’
