Whatever the model of the tournament is Bangladesh is all set to take part in the approaching edition of the Asia Cup in September hosted by Pakistan, clarified the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s cricket operations chairman Mohammad Jalal Yunus.
Considering the historical political unrest between India and Pakistan, the host board proposed the hybrid model to make the meet successful.
The hybrid model denotes having matches divided between Pakistan and the UAE, with India playing its games in the UAE.
The model was resisted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, and PCB Chief Najam Sethi then presented a diluted model with Pakistan getting to host only four games and the rest in the UAE.
‘We are inclined to feature in the Asia Cup. Under which would it take place hybrid or anything else would be settled by the member countries. Whatever the model is we are prepared to play in the tournament, said Yunus on Monday in Mirpur
However, given the logistics complications and also to ensure the players’ fitness ahead of the upcoming ICC World Cup in India under the scorching heat in the United Arab Emirates, BCB president Nazmul Hasan notified the Pakistan Cricket Board that the hybrid model of the regional competition wouldn’t be feasible for them.
Afterwards, he was invited by the current ACC chairman, Joy Shah, to attend a meeting on Sunday in Ahmedabad while the grand finale of the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League alongside their India, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka counterparts.
However, BCB’s cricket operations chief said that they have yet to receive any official decision in this connection.
‘Since we haven’t received any official decision, we are waiting for it.’
Jalal Yunus also confirmed that Bangladesh’s lower middle order batsman Mahmudullah is set to miss out on the forthcoming one-day international series against the touring Afghanistan as he has applied to BCB for a leave from his national duty from June 22 to July 5 to perform Hajj.
However, Bangladesh are scheduled to play their ODIs on July 5, 8, and 11 in Chattogram.
'Ryad [Mahmudullah] applied to us, citing that he was going to perform Hajj, therefore he would be on leave from June 22 to July 5 and would join the national camp after Hajj.’
‘He wouldn’t be able to feature in the ODIs as we are scheduled to play the series opener on July 5,’ said Yunus.
