Bangladesh national team wicketkeeper batsman Liton Das won the ‘Sportsperson of the Year 2022’ award as the ‘Bangladesh Sports Press Association’ granted awards to current and former athletes, along with sports organisers and organisations in 15 categories, in a ceremony at a city hotel on Sunday.
Aside from that, he also registered the ‘Cricketer of the Year’ award as well.
SAFF Women’s Championship 2022 winning team captain Sabina Khatun won both the ‘Popular Choice Award’ and the ‘Women’s Footballer of the Year’ award, as the former was decided by public votes.
Sabina and national recurve women’s team archer Nasrin Akther, who won the ‘Archer of the Year’ award, were also in the contest with Liton to become the Sports Person of the Year 2022.
Sabina, Liton, and sprinter Imranur Rahman, who won the ‘Athlete of the Year’ award, were in the race for the ‘Popular Choice Award.’
The other award winners are Nigar Sultana Joty (Cricketer of the Year, Women) Robson Azevedo De Silva (Footballer of the Year, Men), Ashraful Islam (Hockey Player of the Year), Golam Rabbani Choton (Coach of the Year), paddler Nafiz Iqbal and shuttler Sifat Ullah Ghalib ( Emerging Players of the Year), Kushtia district swimming coach Amirul Islam (Grasroot Level Organiser), hurdler Sumita Rani (Special Honours), Bangladesh Kabaddi Federation (Vibrant Organisation), while Bangladesh Women's Football team and Bangladesh physically challenged cricket team got ‘Special Felicitation.’
Liton, Sabina, the Bangladesh Women's Football team, and the Bangladesh physically challenged cricket team all received Tk one lakh each as prize money, while all the others received Tk 25,000 each.
State minister for youth and sports Zahid Ahsan Russel was present at the award ceremony as chief guest and distributed awards among the winners.
International Sports Press Association (Asia) vice-president Mubarak Mohammed Al-Buainain, secretary general Malik Amjad Aziz, and Square Toiletries Limited managing director Anjan Chowdhury also graced the occasion among others.
