Bangladesh ODI skipper Tamim Iqbal claimed that he doesn’t think about his captaincy much and even never thought of captaining the Tigers in the 50-over game Instead he was made captain by the Bangladesh Cricket Board to fill the shoes of the former captain.
Following the stepping down of Mashrafe Bin Mortaza from the role in the early part of March 2020 in the series against the touring Zimbabwe, the BCB named Tamim as the captain of Bangladesh one-day internationals.
However, under his captaincy, Bangladesh played really well in their much-liked version of the game, that guided them to achieve some monumental wins including clinching series against the host South Africa at their den for the first time and securing series over the mighty India at home, respectively.
Under his laudable leadership, Bangladesh finished in the third position in the ICC World Cup Super League points table, bagging 155 points from 24 games with 15 wins and 8 losses to make a direct qualification for the approaching ICC World Cup in October-November in India.
‘Captaincy is something that I don't think too much about. I never thought about becoming the captain of the Bangladesh team, even when I was made captain. It's not like it'll be the end of the world for me if I'm not the captain anymore, said Tamim in England after the third and final ODI against Ireland.
‘I like to enjoy my games. The board has given me responsibility, and I'm trying to do my best.’
He further asserted that under his leadership they had done a decent job until now, adding that although he had made some mistakes while captaining his side however, did some good things as well.
‘Till now, I think I've done a decent job. You will see me making mistakes and doing good things as well in the future. That's how the captaincy journey is.’
The veteran campaigner further expressed his contentment after they sealed a thrilling five-run victory in the third and final ODI against their Ireland counterpart in Chelmsford, England, on Sunday.
The win that aided them in clinching the three ODI series by 2-0 against the hosts also paved the way for Bangladesh to end the premier cycle of the ICC World Super League in third position after New Zealand and England.
‘Overall, I am very happy with this series, as we haven't succeeded in many 300-plus chases.’
