Shanto's maiden ton guides Tigers' to win in style

Herry Tector’s blazing hundred was in vain after Najmul Hossain Shanto hit his maiden ODI ton that guided Bangladesh to register a three-wicket win over Ireland in the rain-hit second of three one-day internationals in Chelmsford on Friday.

Shanto smashed a 93-ball 117, hitting twelve fours and three maximums, while Towhid Hridoy and Mushfiqur Rahim chipped in with a quick-fire 58-ball 68 and an unbeaten 28-ball 36 to breeze past the mammoth 320-7 in 45 overs with three balls to spare, pursuing a challenging 319-6.

It was Bangladesh’s third-highest chase in the ODIs since 322 against the West Indies in the ICC World Cup 2019 in Taunton.

George Dockrell and Curtis Campher each claimed two wickets, and Josh Little, Mark Adair, and Graham Hume claimed one wicket each.

In reply to a massive total, opener Tamim Iqbal and Liton Das’s early returns for 7 and 21 pushed Bangladesh backfoot in the match.

However, with Shanto and Shakib Al Hasan sharing a valuable 61 off 47 balls in the third wicket, Bangladesh stretched the innings before the latter fell to Curtis Campher for 26.

Shanto then formed a cracking 102-ball, 131-run partnership with Hridoy in the next stand to pull the Tigers close to the two hundred and fifty mark before the latter was removed by George Dockrell, leaving the tourists at 232-4.

Meanwhile, Shanto reached his maiden hundred milestone from 83 balls and further shared a 29 run stand with Mushfiqur Rahim, before he fell to Campher in 36.5 overs.

However, the rest was done by Mushfiq who went untroubled until the final delivery to reach the Tigers to the shores of victory.

Earlier, sent into bat although the hosts lost their opening pair, Paul Sterling and Stepehen Doheny, for a duck and 12, respectively, by Mahmud inside the powerplay, however, rebounded in the match following a 104-ball 98 run stand between Andy Balbirnie and Tector in the third wicket stand.

However, the former fell to Shoriful for 42 off 57 balls.

Then, banking on Tector and Dockrell’s bats, the hosts amassed a majestic total.

Hasan Mahmud and Shoriful Islma scalped two each while Taijul Islam and Ebadot Hossain took one each.

The third and final tie of the series will be held on Sunday at the same venue.
