Devon Conway hit a blistering fifty as New Zealand scripted a dominating 89-run win over the defending champion Australia in the opening game of Super 12 of the ICC T20 World Cup in Sydney on Saturday.
This is their first ever win in 11 years as the Blackcaps defeated Australia in Australia in December 2011.
Conway struck an undefeated 58-ball 92 while Finn Allen smacked a whirlwind 42 off just 16 balls to post 200-3.
Santner and Tim Sourt were the pick among the bowlers to scalp three wickets each, while Trent Boult took two and Lockie Ferguson, Ish Sodhi claimed one each to bowl out the hosts for 111 in 17.1 overs.
For the Aussies, Glen Maxwell scored a highest, 28 off 20 balls, while a 18-ball 21 came from Pat Cummins as the second top.
With the ball, Josh Hazewood claimed 2 and Adam Zampa finished with one wicket.
Sent to bat, Kiwi opening pair Finn Allen and Devon Conway made a flying start as they amassed a cracking 56 in just 4.1 overs before Hazelwood rattled the stumps of Finn for 42.
Skipper Kane Williamson joined the party with Conway, forming a 53-ball 69 in the second wicket stand to accelerate the team total. However, they couldn’t carry on their go as the former was trapped leg before for a run-a-ball 23 by Zampa.
However, Conway went big gun, playing single-handedly in the middle and penultimate overs, adding a quick-fire 27 off 18 and 48 off 24 with Glenn Phillips and James Nisham to pull the side to a daunting 200-3.
In reply, the hosts made a stuttering start as they lost their top five batsmen for 68 inside the eleventh overs that completely pushed them out of the game.
However, they sustained the debacle in the middle and death overs as well, at regular intervals, to depose for 111 with 17 balls to spare.
