Najmul Hossain Shanto hit a cracking fifty that guided Bangladesh to register their first ever victory against the world champion England as they secured a six-wicket win over the visitors in the opener of the three Twenty20 internationals at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chattogram on Thursday.
With Shanto smacking a 30-ball 50, hitting eight fours, and Shakib Al Hasan remaining unbeaten on 34 off 24 balls, the home side reached the target of 158-4 with 12 balls to spare, in reply to 156-6.
Jos Buttler made the top score with a blazing 67 off 42 balls.
England were knocked out of the game in the first set after Bangladesh’s opening pair Liton Das and Rony Talukdar formed a gutsy 33-run stand inside the fourth over before.
Although the removal of the duo for 43 made a bit of trouble for the hosts however, they overcame it after Shanto and debutant Towhid went big guns against the world class bowling attack.
Shanto struck Mark Wood for four straight boundaries in his initial over, that gave the Tigers the essence of achieving a sublime success against the world champions.
In the third wicket stand, the southpaw alongside Towhid added a magnificent 39-ball 65 to curb the early damage and land the harbor of the victory before they fell to Ali and Wood, leaving the side to a daunting 112-4 in 12.2 overs.
Meanwhile, Shanto earned his third T20I fifty.
Then Shakib and Afif Hossain shared a 34-ball, 46-run inning to take the Tigers to their maiden T20I victory against the reigning champions. Afif stood on 15 off 13.
Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood, and Moeen Ali claimed one wicket each.
Earlier, With Nasum Ahmed and Shakib missing a dolly each of the England opening pair Salt and Buttler for 2 and 13 runs respectively, the visitors made a flurry start to pull the side to 80 without any trouble inside the tenth over.
However, the duo failed to continue the momentum after the former fell to Nasum.
David Malan followed Salt’s step just after two overs for 4, which limited England to 88-2.
However, Buttler continued single handedly adding 47 off 25 balls in the third wicket stand with Ben Duckett prior to his dismissal by Hasan Mahmud.
Duckett hit a 13-ball 20 before Mustafizur Rahman rattled his stumps.
