Herath hopes to win against England

Bangladesh spin bowling coach Rangana Hearath hoped to win against England when they take on the side in the forthcoming ODI and T20I series starts on March 1.

And to achieve success, he stressed the following processes: proper planning along with a fine build-up.

The visitors who are scheduled to arrive in Bangladesh on February 24 will feature in three ODIs and the similar number of T20Is at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur and the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram, respectively.

‘Obviously, playing against any other team, we are expecting to win, that is our ultimate target. But before you win, you need to follow the process, practice, how you plan, it should be done as soon as possible,’ said Herath on Sunday in Mirpur.

On Thursday, the Bangladesh Cricket Board announced that left-arm spinner Taijul Islam will replace Nasum Ahmed in the one-day squad for the tour of England.

Backing the selection panel, the veteran Sri Lankan coach said that having a champion left-arm spinner like Shakib Al Hasan alongside a go-to bowler like Mehidy Hasan Miraz they decide to drop Nasum for the high-profile series.

‘When Shakib is there, we don’t have to find another two left-arm spinners. Miraz is there. So, selectors have to pick either Nasum or Taijul. In that case, those performances are equal. Somebody has to be selected.’

Taijul, who has been termed a 'Test Specialist' since the inception of his career, also proved his worth in the 50 over games in recent times as well. Although he has only appeared in 12 ODIs until today, his impressive low-priced spells against Zimbabwe in August 2022 could win the hearts of the selection panel.

Despite taking just one wicket in the second of three ODIs against the hosts in Harare, allowing 48 runs in 10 overs, the 31-year-old claimed 2-34 in nine overs in the third and final match at the same venue.

Earlier, in July of the same year, he concluded with his career-best 5-28 in the third one-day international against the host West Indies, at Provence.
