Comilla Victorians captain Imrul Kayes credited their local campaigners as Tanvir Islam, Liton Das, Mustafizur Rahman, and Mukidul Islam for clinching their fourth Bangladesh Premier League title at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Thursday. He believes that they played the pivotal role with their gleaming shows throughout the competition that eventually powered them to retain the trophy as well.
He also agreed that they could achieve success if they played as a family. At the same time, he praised their franchise owner, Nafisa Kamal, for her tireless efforts behind the scenes to add another title to the country's lone T20 franchise competition.
Imrul has recently talked to Sportsmail24.com about various aspects of winning one more title. Here are the excerpts:
Sportsmail24: You couldn’t make a steady start as you had lost the first three games. However, you could turn the table vigorously and then continue it. What were the plots behind the success?
Imrul: Honestly speaking, we couldn’t fix our team combination at the initial stage. If you recall, we didn't play Tanvir in the first couple of ties, despite my suggestion; eventually, he was dropped from the best eleven with the mindset of "let's see what happens," which was a huge mistake. The second point was that, after losing another game in the Chattogram phase, Nafisa apa [Nafisa Kamal, the franchise owner], as she discussed with me and Salahuddin Sir [the head coach], played a critical role in getting back into the competition. Then we encouraged him, and she replied, "Okay, then let’s go forward. She became quite emotional after our three consecutive defeats. Later, I talked with our head coach about what we could do to gain momentum. However, the win against the Chattogram Challengers changed our momentum.
Sportsmail24: How is Nafisa Kamal as an owner? Is she dominating or supportive, or how inspiring is she?
Imrul: See, Comilla is such a franchise who always craves for championships; they always remain keen on sealing the title. They never consider money as a means to an end. They always aim to bring in world-class campaigners. The thing is, we don't care how much it costs to earn a title. She also storms brain on roping the best possible local and overseas players, so she went for advanced signings with players like Moeen Ali, Sunil Narine, and Andre Russell.
Sportsmail24: How significant was the role of your local players? Could you tell us a few names?
Imrul: Obviously, they played a great role in our success. Apart from the foreigners, they were like the nucleus of our team. Overseas players would only serve as backup, with local players handling the majority of the work. The way Tanvir, Mustafizur Rahman, Liton Das, and Mukidul Islam featured throughout the tournament was just incredible. They all played important roles in helping us win the championship. In the title decider, Liton’s inning was magnificent, and if he hadn’t played like that, the fate of the game might have been different.
Sportsmail24: In terms of securing the BPL title, you are after Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, as under his reign, different teams have clinched four titles, whereas you as a captain have earned three titles for Comilla out of their four. What was the key?
Imrul: Of course, it’s a blessing from the almighty, I must say; otherwise, it wouldn’t be possible. Championships don’t require playing better cricket or having a few big names; luck also plays a pivotal role here. Second, if you can form strong bonds with your teammates, you will be much more likely to succeed.I think I could make it among our team members. As a captain, you shouldn’t have an ego. You should treat all your team members, both local and overseas, equally.
Sportsmail24: Comilla retained your captaincy; how prestigious is that for you, given that you have led the team for the past couple seasons in a row?
Imrul: It’s a matter of huge ecstasy. I have been involved with the Comilla franchise since they played as the Sylhet Royals, which means for the last eight years. That hints that of course they rely on me, just as I also feel ownership when I make an appearance for them. In fact, I feel like family. It’s a matter of great feelings.
I hope you noticed that I didn't perform well in this edition of BPL because I wasn't at my best for the sake of my team.I always thought of my team rather than myself. And you will possess the feeling when you own the team.
Sportsmail24: Nafisa used to say that we liked to be together as a family. Is that the ultimate basis of your success?
Imrul: Of course, you would see that we don’t change players frequently. We always retain six to seven players in each season. That indicates that we became like a family, which helped us greatly.
