Comilla clinch fourth BPL title

Johnson Charles and Liton Das blazed a fifty each to power the defending champion Comill Victorians to their fourth title as they beat the Sylhet Strikers by seven wickets in the final of the Bangladesh Premier League at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Thursday.

Johnson made an unbeaten 52-ball 79, while Liton Das finished with a 39-ball 55 to cruise past the target of 176-3, with four balls to spare.

Earlier, Sylhet managed a challenging 175-7, banking on Najmul Hossain Shanto’s 64 off 45 balls and an undefeated 74 off 48 from Mushfiqur Rahim.

Mustafizur Rahman was the pick of the Comilla bowlers, picking up 2-31, while Andre Russell, Tanvir Islam, Sunil Narine, and Moeen Ali took one wicket each.

For Sylhet, Rubel claimed two wickets, and George Linde concluded with one.

Sent to bat, Sylhet made a staggering start, losing their top-order duo Towhid Hridoy and Mashrafe Bin Mortaza for a duck and one by Tanvir Islam and Andre Russell that shortened them to 26-2 inside the third over.

Then Shanto, the top scorer in this edition of BPL, rebounded the side, launching a countermove along with the veteran Mushfiqur Rahim to curb Sylhet’s initial devastation.

In its continuation, the southpaw earned his fifth fifty of this version of the competition before he was dismissed by Moeen Ali. In the process, he blazed nine fours and a maximum.

Shanto's fifty also gave him the fantastic five hundred milestone as the first local batsman in the country's lone T20 franchise contention, and he finished with a massive 516 runs from 15 games at an average of 39.69.

However, following the dismissal of Shanto, who added a 56-ball 79 in the third wicket stand with Mushfiqur, the remaining responsibilities of Sylhet were grasped by the latter.

Mushfiqur, who earned just a single fifty in this BPL, then went big guns and continued single handedly until the final ball to sling an exciting total for the side.

Defending the total, Sylhet bowlers made a brilliant start, with Rubel Hossain removing Comilla's West Indies all-rounder Sunil Narine for 10 off five balls in 2.2 overs.

Then it was George Linde, who struck just after an over to reduce the defending champions to 34-2.

Despite the loss of two standing partners, opener Liton stood tall against all Sylhet bowlers and pushed the side towards victory alongside Johnson Charles.

In the third wicket stand, they shared a priceless 70-run stand to pull the side beyond the hundred run mark in 12.3 overs before Liton was caught by Shanto at deep mid-wicket from a tricky Rubel delivery in the same over, leaving the side on 104-3.

No doubt the fall of the wicket broke Comilla’s momentum a bit.

However, the titlist did not take long to regain the rhythm, as Rubel finished with 23 runs in the seventeenth over, assisting them to win the game.

Tanzim Hasan Sakib was expected to go economical, but he also licked eight runs, which set the new target at 21 runs to win from 12 balls.

However, Johnson made the task pretty easy, giving away 18 runs in the 19th over.

In the final over Comilla, they were just three runs away from their fourth title that they eventually brought with a single from Moeen.
