Fortune Barishal head coach Nazmul Abedin said that Shakib Al Hasan’s decision not to come into bat did not bring anything fruitful for them against Rangpur Riders in the eliminator of the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Sunday.
Quite a few eyebrows were raised despite holding the third spot with 375 runs at an average of 41.67 among the top run getters of the ace all-rounder opted to come down the order that eventually suffered them a four-wicket loss and also knocked out of the contention.
Shakib sent Karim Janat and Bhanuka Rajapaksa ahead of him, but the duo could not fulfill their responsibility of accelerating the run rate for their team, adding 44 runs in 29 balls.
‘It was a captain’s call [not to come to bat], and it is not a fact that he did not discuss it with us; the only thing is that he was comfortable with the decision and was thinking if they were around, they could accelerate in one or two overs,’ said Nazmul.
‘Even if we lost one or two wickets, it wouldn’t be a problem, but we could not capitalize the opportunity,’ he said.
‘I don’t think that plan became fruitful for us,’ he added.
