The Dhaka Dominators failed to conclude the ninth season of the Bangladesh Premier League campaign on a bright spot as they suffered a 15-run defeat against the Chattogram Challengers in their last game of the league phase at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Tuesday.
With an unbeaten 20-ball 34 from Ziaur Rahman and 30 off 29 balls from Chattogram's Pakistan middle order, Usman Khan, the side amassed a modest 118-9.
Curtis Campher claimed 3-15 in response, limiting Dhaka to 103-9 in the stipulated overs, while Mrittunjoy Chowdhury and Ziaur Rahman each took two wickets.
Dhaka’s left arm spinner Arafat Sunny was exceptional among the bowlers, scalping 4-22.
Although a win or loss wouldn’t add any value for the sides as Dhaka and Chattogram failed to manage a spot in the play-offs of the competition on the back of their inferior run rates, sealing only three wins each from twelve and eleven encounters, respectively.
The early dismissal of Chattogram's top order fifer for 28 inside the seventh over, opting to bat, raised the possibility of a lower-than-expected total after Arafat Sunny and Al-Amin Hossain emerged as the wreckers-in-chief, claiming two wickets each.
Although a 39-ball, 41 run stand between Campher and Usman gave them a hope to overcome the initial wreck and also to post a substantial total on the board however their hopes were dashed after the former fell to Amir Hamza on a slow 11 off 16 balls, followed by Usman, by Sunny , leaving the side on a staggering 72-7.
Then sitting on Ziaur’s undefeated quick-fire 34 Chattogram past the hundred mark.
Dhaka lost their way while chasing a small target, losing the top-order trio for 39 runs inside the power play.
Although a 28-run partnership and a 21-run stand between Alex Blake, Nasir Hossain, and Nasir-Nihaduzzam in the fourth and fifth wickets showed signs of life, it wasn't enough to push them past Chattogram's total.
