Mohammad Rizwan struck a blistering fifty that guided the Comilla Victorians to continue their winning streak as the defending champions secured a six-wicket win over the Chattogram Challengers in the Bangladesh Premier League at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Saturday.
Rizwan made a quick-fire 47-ball 61, his fourth fifty in this BPL, to meet the goal of 157-4 with an over to spare, pursuing a humble 156-7 by Chattogram.
Afif Hossain and Usman Khan finished with 66 off 49 and 52 off 41 balls, respectively, to amass a moderate total for Chattogram.
With the victory, Comilla have bolstered their third place in the points table with 14 points from ten ties, while their closest contender, Fortune Barishal, are holding the second spot, bagging similar points from the similar number of encounters while having a superior run rate.
Now they would surely look to surpass Barishal in earning a spot in the ‘Qualifier 1’ from their next two games of the competition, which would hand them a double opportunity to keep their final hopes alive.
Chattogram's Pakistani campaigner Usman Khan fought back after their top order duo Mehedi Maruf and Khawaja Nafay were dismissed for naught and two by Tanvir Islam, cutting the side to 6-2.
Usman and his partner Afif shared a brilliant 64-ball 88-run stand in the third wicket stand to take the side close to a century before the latter was dismissed by Tanvir Islam, leaving them at 94-3.
Despite losing his regular partner, Afif continued to thrash the Comilla bowlers out of the boundary, adding a stormy 21-ball 34 with skipper Shuvagata Hom in the fourth over and 15 off 8 with Darwish Rasooli in the seventh over before falling to Hasan Ali in 19.1 overs.
Comilla, chasing a modest total, lost opener Shykat Ali for 15 when Mrittunjoy Chowdhury caught Rasooli.
However, Rizwan looked desperate to pull the defending champions to the goal, and to accomplish it, he formed 22 off 17 balls and 15 off 18 balls stands with Imrul Kayes and Johnson Charles, respectively, before the duo were excluded on 19 and 9 runs, leaving the side on 57-3 inside the ninth over.
Then Rizwan went big guns alongside Mosaddek Hossain and shared a substantial 47-ball 76 run stand before he fell to Mrittunjoy in 16.4 overs, amassing 133-4.
The rest was done by Mosaddek and his compatriot Jaker Ali, who added 24 off 14 balls to secure their seventh victory of the competition.
