Bangladesh U-19 women’s team head coach Dipu Roy Chowdhury accepted that their gleaming showcase in the ICC U-19 Women's World Cup hints at their well-built pipeline to replace the seniors in the future.
Bangladesh were in competition with Australia and India for a spot in the semi-finals, but both those teams possessed a higher run rate, causing the Bangladesh side to fall out of the tournament as they suffered a five wicket loss to South Africa in their second and final Super Six qualification.
However, the inclusion of four cricketers from the Under-19 team for the national team in the upcoming ICC Women's World T20 was enough to substantiate Dipu's observation.
‘Everyone has an age (Salma Khatun and others) and a time will come when they will retire and now we can hope that there are players in the pipeline who can replace them when they are not around,’ told Dipu to the reporters upon the arrival of women’s team in Dhaka on Friday.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board included uncapped batter Shorna Akhter, Disha Biswas, Marufa Akter and Dilara Akter in the approaching ICC T20 World Cup in South Africa, starts in February 10, although the latter was replaced by Fargana Haque in the 15-member squad as she sustained an ankle injury.
The meet's towering campaigners were Shorna and Marufa, while the campaigners, which included hard hitting opener Afia Humaira, Anam Prottasha, Disha, Rabeya Khan, and Dilara, helped them end the tournament with their heads held high.
"If you talk about power hitting, there is Prottasha and you can also talk about Shorna Akhter and they batted exceptionally well and you cannot understand that without seeing them,’ he said.
‘It is a positive sign that four cricketers got a chance in the national team and there is also one Under-19 cricketer on the bench called Rabeya (Khan),’ he added.
The women’s team head coach further added that he was content with the performances of Marufa and Shorna in the tournament and hoped for their frequent appearances during the ICC Women's T20 World Cup.
"My personal observation is that Shorna Akhter and Marufa Akter will feature in the playing XI in the World Cup, and they will become big players in future," he concluded.
