Mohammad Rizwan and Liton Das struck fifty each, that aided the Comilla Victorians to continue their winning streak as they beat the Khulna Tigers by 4 runs in the last over of the thriller of the Bangladesh Premier League at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Saturday.
With Liton making a 42-ball 50, his second half century in this edition of BPL, and Rizwan standing on a 47-ball 54, his second half century as well, the titlists managed an exciting 165-2 in the stipulated over.
In response, Comilla, who needed six runs in the final ball to win their third match of the season, were restricted to 161-6 after their skipper Yasir Ali Chowdury could only hit a single and stood on a quick-fire 19-ball 30.
Andy Balbirnie led the team with 38 points off 31 balls.
Comilla’s Pakistani paceman Neseem Shah was the pick among the bowlers, claiming 2-29.
Sent to bat, Comilla made an ideal start as their opening pair, Liton and Rizwan, went undamaged until the 9.5 overs that allowed them to post 65 before the former fell to Nahidul on 50, giving a catch to Balbirnie.
Rizwan and his partner Johnson Charles shared a significant 38-ball, 60-run stand to take the side past the hundred-run mark and up to 125 before the latter was caught by Mahmudul Hasan Joy for a 22-ball 39 by Wahab Riaz.
Despite losing the two set partners, Rizwan stood tall against the blows from the Khulna bowler as he further added a 25-ball 40 with his compatriot Khusdil Shah, who remained unbeaten on 13 off 11 and set an exciting target for their counterpart.
Following a difficult chase, Khulna's veteran opener Tamim Iqbal was trapped leg before by Naseem for 11 off 10 balls.
Then, in the second wicket stand, Balbirnie and Shai Hope combined for a flurry of 40 off 49 balls to fight back Khulna, but the duo failed to maintain the momentum as the former was run out, limiting the side to 63-2.
In the next stand, Hope and Joy added a whirlwind 21-ball 43 to bolster the innings, curbing the early damage; however, their hopes were shattered after the latter was dismissed for a gusty 13-ball 26 by Mosaddek Hossain.
Then, in the sixth and seventh wicket stand, Hope-Yasir and Riaz-Yasir shared a 24 and 20-run stand, respectively, to reach the target; however, that wasn’t instrumental to completing the task.
With the victory, Comilla strengthened their third place in the points table with ten points, bagging five wins from eight ties, while Khulna upheld their fifth spot with two victories from seven games.
