Despite securing a five-wicket win over the United Arab Emirates the Bangladesh U-19 women’s team failed to confirm their semifinal spot in the ICC U-19 Women’s World Cup on the back of a poor run rate in their second and final tie of the Group 1 Super Six at the Potchefstroom on Wednesday.
The young Tigresses needed a win with a huge margin that could hand them a superior run rate to surpass Australia, who are holding the second spot in the points table with NNR 2.210, to get into the last four of the marquee competition.
The junior Tigresses reached the meager target of 73-5 in 9.1 overs, thanks to Shorna Akter's unbeaten 19-ball 38.
Earlier, the UAE managed a paltry 69-9 in the stipulated overs, with Rabeya Khan scalping three and Marufa Akter taking two wickets.
Lavanya Keny scored a top score of 29 off 46 balls for the side.
Batting first, the UAE suffered a batting collapse, losing their top order quartet for 37 runs in 10.2 overs.
Then, riding on Lavnya’s 29 and Mahika Gaur’s 17, they could surpass the fifty thresholds.
Bangladesh reached it on the back of a crucial 25-ball, 46-run stand between Shorna and Rabeya Khan in the fourth wicket.
Rabeya finished with a 13-ball 14.
