Bangladesh spinner Taijul Islam believes that if they can take around a 250-run lead in the second innings that would be huge enough to turn their tables against India in the ongoing second and final Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.
With Bangladesh managing 227 in the first innings followed by 19-0 at the stumps of day-2 play, were trailing by 80 runs in the second innings as they bowled out India for 314 in their first innings.
‘The wicket does not look very bad to me. It looks normal so far. We have to survive now...if Bangladesh can take a lead of around 250 runs, anything can happen,’ said Taijul on Friday after the day-2 play.
Bangladesh started the day on a positive note, after Taijul Islam removed the visitors top order trio for 86-3 at lunch followed by Taskin Ahmed who dismissed Virat Kohli for 24 soon-after the break.
However, the host bowlers failed to endure the momentum in the mid-session and went lavish that aided Rishav Pant and Sreyas Iyer to share a crucial 182-ball 159-run stand in the fifth wicket to bounce back India in the game.
Taijul also accepted their fiasco believing that, if they would go low-priced in that session, the home side would have been in a better position.
‘Mid-session went a bit expensive for us today. If we could give less runs during that period even without getting a wicket maybe we could have been in a better position. Still I would say we are not in a very bad position.’
The 30-year-old further promised to overcome their shortcomings in the fielding department as they missed three clear opportunities to dismiss Pant and Iyer that paved India's way to surpass the hosts.
‘To be honest, we are lacking in this area. The shortcoming is that you wouldn’t get the chance while encountering a top side. Perhaps the other teams get a couple of opportunities against Bangladesh. We will try to overcome it soon.’
