Bangladesh batting coach Jamie Siddons expressed his utmost frustration after Momimul Haque was dismissed just 16 runs away from his 12th Test hundred against India on the opening day of the second and final Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Thursday.
The home side managed a modest 227 runs before being all out in 73.5 overs in their first innings, thanks to Mominul's 157-ball 84, which included 12 fours and a maximum.
In reply, India's opening stand went untroubled on 19, that trailing the visitors by 208 runs at stumps.
‘We let him have a bit of fun in his batting. Hit some balls hard. It was more a T20 approach. I don’t know if it helped him or not but he played some shots and had a lot of success. Shame he didn’t get a hundred,’ said Siddons after the day one play in Mirpur.
‘I think he had a more positive approach to the game rather than thinking he was going to get bad balls. He was thinking I am going to score today,’ he added.
Apart from Mominul, no other host batsmen could break the Tigers' batting collapse after they were bundled out for 150 in the first innings of the series opener in Chattogram.
Following the dismissal of Shakib Al Hasan for a sorry 16, Bangladesh’s other star campaigner, Liton Das, was also removed for a small 26-ball 25 that appeared as an obstruction on the way to their healthy total.
Jamie believes that everything that happened to the latter was caused by his transition from the shorter format to the longest version of cricket.
‘I think he is finding it hard to make that transition from the short format, what he did in the T20 World Cup. All that preparation. He played the one-day matches, and now he is playing Tests where he should be hitting the ball along the ground.’
‘He looked beautiful in both his innings. Scores quickly, which we love seeing him do, but hits one in the air. Makes another mental error, I think. He is our best player. He should get big scores.’
