Bangladesh found them in the strong position after Taijul Islam and Mehidy Hasan Miraz struck in the last hour of the opening day of the first of the two-match Test series against India at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chattogram on Wednesday.
With Taijul picking up 3-84 and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Syed Khaled Ahmed taking two and one wicket, respectively, the visitors managed a moderate 278-6 at stumps.
However, if the hosts hadn't dropped three catches, Cheteshwar Pujara and Sreyas Iyer would have shared a record 149-run fifth-wicket stand before the former was dismissed by Taijul for 90 off 203 runs.
In the fifth wicket stand, this was India's highest fifth wicket stand until today.
Iyer, who was given two chances by Nurul Hasan and Ebadot Hossain for 37 and 67 runs, respectively, stood on 82.
Earlier, sent to bowl, Taijul Islam and Syed Khaled Ahmed struck early in the morning to reduce India to 85-3 at lunch.
Taijul brought the initial breakthrough for the home side after he removed Shubman Gill for 20, followed by Lokesh Rahul, who was dismissed by Khaled on 22.
Although Virat Kohli looked assured to curb the early damage, however, he failed as Taijul showed him the way to the dressing room, trapping leg before for 1.
In the fourth wicket stand, Pujara and Rishabh Pant shared a 64-ball 73 to curb the initial damage before the latter was dismissed by Miraz for 46.
Meanwhile, Pujara was handed a chance when he drove a full-length delivery to Nurul for 12, however, he couldn’t latch onto the chance.
Bangladesh also had a chance to send Sreayas back when he edged a cut off Shakib Al Hasan on 37 but Nurul once again couldn't hold onto the chance.
Ebadot Hossain then dropped Iyer at the boundary on 67.
