Mahedi Hasan Miraz struck his maiden ton in the one-day international that guided Bangladesh to make history from the brink of disaster as they clinched the three-match ODI series earning a 5-run win in the second tie at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Wednesday.
Miraz hit a towering 83-ball 100 to pull the Tigers from 69 for six to 271 for seven.
In reply, the visitors were restricted to 266-9 courtesy of Shreyas Iyre’s 82, Rohit Sharma’s robust 51 off 28 balls, alongside a run-a-ball 56 from Axar Patel.
Ebadot Hossain was the top bowler, claiming 3-45, while Shakib Al Hasan, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Mustafizur Rahman, Mahmudullah bagged two and one wicket, respectively.
Washington Sundar was the pick of the Indian bowlers, taking three wickets, while Mohammed Siraj and Umran Malik each took two.
Sent to bat Bangladesh made a frustrating start as they lost their top six batsmen for 69.
However, in the seventh wicket stand, Miraz and Mahmudullah shared a 148-run partnership to rescue the side from an inescapable disaster before the latter was removed by Umran for a 96-ball 77.
This was their second-highest partnership in the seventh wicket stand, as well as their highest partnership against India at any wicket stand.
This is not the end of their achievements in the historic tie, as Miraz became only the second batter in ODI history to score a century while batting at No. 8 or lower.
And Mehidy-Nasum Ahmed's 23-ball 54 partnership in the eighth wicket stand after the latter stood on a windy 11-ball 18 was Bangladesh's second fastest fifty-plus stand in terms of run rate in ODIs.
Now Bangladesh are only the fifth team to add 200-plus runs after being 6 down.
In pursuit of an exciting 272 runs, the visitors made a shaky start, losing openers Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan for 13 in the third over to Ebadot and Mustafizur, respectively.
In the third and fourth wicket stands, Shreyas Iyer-Washington Sundar, and Shreyas Lokesh Rahul added 26 runs each to curtail the initial wreck before Washington and Rahul were dismissed for 11 and 14, respectively.
However, in the next stand, Shreyas and Axar formed a 101-ball 107 to exceed one hundred as a team total before the former was excluded by Miraz for a 102-ball 82, followed by the latter for a run-a-ball 56 by Ebadot.
Skipper, Rohit Sharma, who earlier sent to the hospital after suffering a blow to his left thumb during fielding, came at nine, stood on a brisk 27-ball 51 to drag the visitors to 266-9, who needed six runs in the last delivery.
This was Bangladesh's consecutive two ODI series win at their home against the top ranked side.
Earlier in 2015 the Tigers sealed the three match ODIs by 2-1.
The third and final tie of series will be held on December 10 at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chattogram.
